Miracle baby born at Scunthorpe hospital
A miracle ‘sugar bag’ baby has defied the odds and is at home with his proud parents after spending four months in hospital.
Ashton Gale put in an early appearance on November 18 2018 when he was born four months premature at Scunthorpe General Hospital. The tiny tot has since faced laser treatment and an operation!
Today he is the picture of health with his proud parents Shannon Castelow and Kyle Gale, of Scunthorpe, who are fundraising for the unit where he spent his first few months – the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
Shannon said: “We are thrilled to have Ashton at home as it was touch and go when he was born. He was so small and vulnerable. The nurses on the unit were absolutely amazing and we couldn’t have been better looked after.”
Ashton’s story of survival began when his dad made a 999 emergency call as Shannon had started to lose blood. Unbeknown to them she had started to go into early labour and was admitted to Scunthorpe hospital.
“After two weeks of complete bedrest Ashton decided he couldn’t wait any longer and came into the world weighing 630 grams. Kyle and I were told to decide on a name quickly as there were concerns he wouldn’t survive.”
However, their tiny tot has defied the odds and is getting stronger every day. Proud dad Kyle said: “He is our little fighter. He has steadily gained weight and successfully recovered from a hernia operation, and laser treatment to both of his eyes. He is our little miracle.”
He said: “The staff have been phenomal. They have not only helped our beautiful baby boy, but been their every step of the way for Shannon and me. We want to raise money for them as a way of saying thank you.”
His step dad runs Roxby Road car garage in Winterton and has put a charity collection box in there to help raise funds for the unit.
