Disney wish becomes a reality

A wish to provide comfortable chairs for parents to stay over with their poorly children has been granted thanks to local fundraisers.

Scunthorpe hospital’s charity, The Health Tree Foundation (HTF), launched an appeal to raise £18,000 to buy the special chairs which transform into comfy beds.

Staff on the Disney ward made a wish to the charity last year asking for the chairs to provide a better experience for parents who wish to stay over.

Disney ward manager Vikki McAlpine said: “It can be a frightening and anxious time for parents when their child is admitted to hospital. Naturally there are times when they want to be by their side and stay with them overnight.”

Local fundraisers heard about the appeal and raised enough money to buy eight of the chairs. They were: Charlotte, James and Caleb Batley, Charlotte Shaw, Barnetby’s St Barnabas School and Scunthorpe Lions Club. There was also a legacy donation from Jo Nutbrown in memory of her family relatives.

The Scunthorpe General Hospital League of Friends donated the money to buy 10 chairs.

Vikki: “Being able to provide somewhere comfortable for parents to sleep when their child comes into the hospital is so important and now we can do that. We would like to thank everyone for their support. The chairs are really making a difference to our families.”
