Festive baubles to brighten up special Christmas tree

A plea for parents to display a festive Christmas bauble in the neonatal unit at Grimsby hospital has been launched.

Staff on the unit are putting up a special tree for parents whose babies received care with them to display a bauble.

They are calling on parents to take a bauble to the unit with the name of their baby on it, together with a date of when they were born. People can also include a picture if they want to.

Ward sister Emma-Jane Spicer said: “Christmas is a time for celebrating and we want to celebrate all the babies we’ve looked after on our ward. It doesn’t matter if they spent one day with us or 100, we still want to have a bauble with your baby on it.

“We love baubles with your picture of your baby on it where possible, as well as a name and a date of when they were born. They will help to create a lovely festive atmosphere on the unit.”

Emma Frankish knows first-hand the care and dedication the unit provides for babies as both her children were looked after by the staff. Her two-year-old son Ronnie was a patient on the unit, as is her eight-week-old daughter Nellie.

Emma said: “I think it’s a brilliant idea. It’s so special and means our babies can always be a part of the ward and have a connection to the nurses. You spend so much time here and the nurses are so good. It feels like one big family.”

She added: “It can be really daunting at first coming onto the unit but the nurses make you feel at ease straight away. Nothing is too much trouble and you can ask them any questions and they are always supportive and happy to help.”

Parents can drop off their bauble at the neonatal unit from Thursday December 1 until Thursday December 8 during visiting times only - 2pm until 4pm or from 4pm until 6pm.
