Group knits up a storm for maternity ward at Grimsby hospital

A thoughtful knit and natter group have donated more than 60 handmade items to the maternity ward at Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital in Grimsby.

A Good Yarn, of Cambridge Street, Cleethorpes, decided to make a difference to the lives of newborns by knitting matching bootie and cardigan sets as well as hats, including extra small ones for babies who are born early.

The group meets every Tuesday between 1pm -4pm, on Friday between 10am-1pm and on Saturday 1pm-3pm, and they always welcome new guests.

Eileen Bower, said: “We meet as much for the knitting as we do for the friendship. We decided to make the cardigans and hats to do something nice for the hospital.

“Some of the items have been knitted with hypo-allergenic yarn too, making the clothing gentler for the babies.”

Labour team manager Michelle Barford said: “We are incredibly grateful to the ladies for making and donating these items. Some of our ladies come in without anything due to unexpectedly going into labour early. It is really important that babies wear hats as they lose a lot of heat from their heads.”
